In late 1950’s THE FIRST REGISTER OF MALIGN DISEASES was made by Djordje Lazic, md and Franjo Kriz, md. There was need for fight against known causes of malign diseases.
1967. Kosta Popov, md gave an idea for founding this society.
1969. Municipal society for fight against cancer Sombor-Apatin was founded by government and Ilija Smiljanic was made the first chairman.
1973. Booklet about malign diseases was published both in Serbo-Croatian and Hungarian language, on 80 pages.
1982-1986. Miroslav Osmokravic, md was chairman of the society. Many lectures were held during that period, also several symposiums about preventive oncology with assistance of oncology dispensary, surgical department in Sombor, and Oncology institute in Sremska Kamenica.
1986. The chairman was Ana Raic, lawyer. Work with children was favorised, and themes for lectures were alcoholism and smoking risks. Program “Early detection of malign diseases in high risk groups” was realized in association with oncology dispensary. 25000 people from our community were included in research.
1987. Club of women operated because of breast disease was founded. It was 3rd in Yugoslavia, after Zagreb and Ljubljana. Founder was Terezija Mataric, md. First FORMAL MEETING was held in March – international month of fight against cancer. This became a tradition.
1990. Society made donations to oncology dispensary. In rough times for all of the country, with stormy changes in social-politics, our society confronted with indifferentiation of community.
1997. Society equiped oncology dispensary with PC, for connection with state register for cancer. Only few enthusiasts were responsible for persistence our society.
